at this size reduction they are not very apparent, but there were quite a few scratches and lines in the original photo.

the first two adjusted images are per the tutorial instructions.  for the last image, i turned the photo to gray scale, reselected the soldier from the alpha channel, deleted the gradient background and then returned the photo to 16M color. then a flag was flood filled in as a backdrop and drop shadow and clarify were applied.
